President Trump said he canceled a planned U.S. attack on Iran and would hold off on ordering new strikes. The announcement came after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called Trump and raised concerns about the U.S. escalating the conflict, fearing Iran retaliate against Gulf energy infrastructure. Trump said he canceled the strikes at the request of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Iran, who urged him to pursue talks with Tehran, and that Israel agreed to join the U.S. in trying to complete the agreement.
Trump described the plan as a deal on Hormuz followed by a deal on the denuclearization of Iran, and said negotiations would resume. AP reported talks beginning Sunday afternoon, while Breitbart reported negotiations restarting Monday afternoon over the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran's nuclear program. Trump said a deal is imminent.
Iranian state media denied that Tehran asked Trump to cancel the strikes, and Iranian officials disputed that a Hormuz reopening deal had been reached. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said talks with Oman over Hormuz have entered final stages, but spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Iran will not return to the prewar arrangement.
Markets reacted to the pause. Reuters reported that oil tumbled as Trump canceled the attack on Iran to reach a nuclear deal.
