The Prisoner Nobody Was Allowed to See

For over thirty-four years, one prisoner was hidden from the world under extraordinary orders. Guards were reportedly instructed that if he ever revealed his face to another person, he was to be killed immediately.
Known today as The Man in the Iron Mask, his true identity remains one of history's greatest unsolved mysteries. Despite living as a prisoner of the French crown for decades, he received unusually comfortable treatment—fine clothing, quality food, and respect far beyond that of ordinary inmates. Why would someone be imprisoned so secretly while being treated so well?
Some believed he was the secret twin or older brother of King Louis XIV. Others claimed he was a disgraced nobleman, a military commander, or a diplomat who knew dangerous state secrets. Voltaire later popularized the legend by claiming the mask was made of iron, although many historians believe it was likely made of black velvet.
When he died in the Bastille in 1703, officials reportedly scrubbed his prison cell clean, removing any trace that might reveal his identity or leave behind a final message.
More than three centuries later, historians still debate the truth.
Who do you think he really was?
