Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable made a costly mistake Friday night, forgetting a crucial MLB mound-visit rule during an 8-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians.
The problem came in the first inning after starting pitcher Noah Schultz had already received a visit from pitching coach Zach Bove. With the bases loaded, Venable later went to the mound to discuss an appeal play, not realizing that another visit to the same pitcher in the inning would force Schultz out of the game.
Schultz was removed after facing just five batters, leaving Chicago’s already tired bullpen with an enormous workload. David Sandlin, who had only recently been called up from Triple-A, was forced into action before he was fully warmed up.
Venable accepted responsibility afterward, saying, “Yeah, just an inexcusable mistake by me where we had an appeal play that we wanted to execute, and, in the urgency of trying to make that happen, just totally lost that we had visited.” He added, “Obviously, that was a mistake. So, just messed it up.”
Sandlin responded calmly: “I got a little extra time out there. I think I got about eight pitches in the 'pen and then got to warm up out there. Can't make any excuses. Just have to get going. Felt good enough and started off great.”
Despite the bizarre situation, Sandlin delivered 5⅓ innings on 96 pitches.
