A Thorny Devil is one of Australia’s most unusual reptiles, famous for its body covered in sharp-looking spines and its remarkable ability to survive in extremely dry desert environments. Despite its intimidating appearance, this small lizard is harmless and grows to only around 20 cm (8 inches) long.
Thorny devils feed almost entirely on ants, sometimes consuming thousands in a single day. Their spiny skin provides protection and camouflage, while a false head-like structure behind the real head can help confuse predators when threatened.
