A Fossa is Madagascar’s largest native carnivorous mammal, famous for its long body, powerful tail, and remarkable climbing ability. Although it looks like a mixture of a cat and mongoose, the fossa belongs to Madagascar’s unique family of carnivores called Eupleridae.
Fossas are agile predators that move effortlessly through both the rainforest canopy and across the forest floor. Their flexible ankles allow their hind feet to rotate, helping them climb down tree trunks headfirst. They primarily hunt lemurs, but also eat rodents, birds, reptiles, and other small animals.
