HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SEASON 3 FINALE EXPLAINED
The finale begins with Rhaenyra learning that Aegon II and Sunfyre survived. News of the king’s return spreads through Westeros, and many people interpret it as proof that the gods support him. For Rhaenyra, this threatens the belief that her victory is inevitable.
Daemon urges her to use absolute strength, and Rhaenyra begins treating resistance as betrayal. She confines Baela after being accused of using people as tools, dismisses Mysaria and orders an attack on Tumbleton. Her need to secure the throne is changing how she treats allies, prisoners and her own family.
WHY DOES RHAENYRA CALL HERSELF THE PRINCE THAT WAS PROMISED?
Rhaenyra goes to the Grand Sept and demands that the High Septon publicly anoint her. When he refuses, she condemns him as a traitor. Outside the Sept, she reveals Aegon the Conqueror’s prophecy about the darkness that will one day threaten Westeros.
But she goes further than Viserys ever did. Rhaenyra presents herself as Rhaenyra the Chosen and declares that she is the Prince That Was Promised.
The show has not confirmed that Rhaenyra fulfils the prophecy. The scene instead shows her transforming a private responsibility into public justification for her rule. She no longer asks people to accept her claim; she argues that opposing her means opposing the survival of the realm.
WHY DID ULF BETRAY EVERYONE?
At Tumbleton, Gwayne and Corlys offer Daemon a divided peace that would preserve Rhaenyra’s crown while giving Daeron authority in the Reach. Daemon rejects it and chooses total victory.
Ulf has already been humiliated by Rhaenyra’s side, while Ormund Hightower tries to buy his loyalty with status and land. During the battle, Ormund reveals what he truly thinks of Ulf and treats him as another disposable weapon.
Ulf finally rides Silverwing, but he does not become a loyal Green. He attacks Daemon’s forces and then turns his fire on Tumbleton. He burns both sides because he has stopped serving either side. Everyone wanted his dragon, but nobody respected the man riding it.
WHAT HAPPENED AT TUMBLETON?
The Blacks enter Tumbleton, but Ulf’s attack destroys the possibility of a clean victory. Ormund Hightower and Roderick Dustin die, Daeron’s fate remains uncertain, and Daemon retreats. Hugh Hammer arrives looking for his family and finds Kat dead, leaving his future loyalty unresolved.
This is a major Fire & Blood change. In the book, Ulf and Hugh become infamous together as the Two Betrayers.
