President Trump is again moving to remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook over allegations that she made false statements on mortgage applications, just over a month after the Supreme Court blocked his earlier removal attempt. Deputy White House Chief of Staff Daniel Scavino sent Cook a letter dated Wednesday saying Trump is considering removing her and that there is sufficient reason to believe she made false statements on mortgage agreements, giving her three weeks to respond.
Scavino wrote that there is a distinct nexus between a basic level of trustworthiness and care in financial matters and the duties of a Member of the Board of Governors, and that her conduct calls into question her competence and trustworthiness as a financial regulator, even if it does not rise to a felony offense. The allegations were first raised by Trump ally William Pulte, described as FHFA Director Bill Pulte, through criminal referrals accusing Cook of falsifying bank documents to obtain favorable mortgage terms before joining the Fed.
Cook, an appointee of Joe Biden, has denied wrongdoing and has never been charged with a crime. Her attorney Abbe Lowell called the allegations baseless, said they are as baseless now as they were a year ago, and vowed to challenge this latest pretext to preserve her position and the Fed's independence. In June the Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that presidents can only remove Fed governors for cause, and lower courts will decide whether the allegations against Cook meet that standard. The Fed declined to comment.
