Israel has reportedly threatened another strike on a secret Syrian site containing radioactive material linked to the former Al Kibar nuclear program, prompting Washington to intervene.
The facility, reportedly known as Site 99, is said to contain yellowcake and leftover nuclear material. While the material cannot produce a nuclear explosion, officials have raised concerns that it could potentially be used in a radiological “dirty bomb.”
According to reports, Israel previously struck the facility’s entrances and later warned that it could attack again if the material remained or Syria attempted to access the site.
The Trump administration reportedly urged Israel to stand down and brought in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to help secure and remove the material. Syria has reportedly agreed to the removal process, although the material has not yet been removed.
