Iran has appointed former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohsen Rezaei to one of the country’s most powerful security positions, putting the veteran military commander at the center of Tehran’s national-security decision-making.
Rezaei, who led the IRGC for 16 years during the Iran-Iraq War, has now been named Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC). He is also reportedly serving as Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei’s representative on the council.
The appointment comes amid continuing U.S.-Iran tensions and growing questions over Tehran’s military and foreign-policy strategy. Rezaei has long been associated with Iran’s hardline security establishment and has expressed skepticism toward negotiations with Washington.
