Trump brushes off reporter question about running for third term

President Donald Trump reignited discussion about a potential third presidential campaign after reporters questioned him Tuesday night about whether he could seek another term in 2028.

Speaking at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Trump acknowledged the idea while pointing to the constitutional limit on presidential elections.

“I’d love to run, but the law is very strong,” Trump told reporters.

He added that supporters had been chanting “2028” at the Patriot Games event he attended earlier that day, saying, “Everybody wants me to do it, but the law is very strong.”

The 22nd Amendment currently limits a person to being elected president no more than twice. Trump has nevertheless continued to make occasional remarks about a possible third term, sometimes joking about the idea and at other times suggesting he could be serious.

At a White House Correspondents’ Dinner in July, he joked that “the third time will be better yet,” before adding, “I’m only kidding.”

His latest comments are likely to keep the debate over a potential 2028 bid alive, even as the constitutional barrier remains firmly in place.
