Arctic Lemming : The tiny tundra survivor thriving beneath the Arctic snow

2026-08-13 2 Dailymotion

An Arctic Lemming is a small, hardy rodent specially adapted to survive in the freezing tundra of the far north. Found across Arctic regions, lemmings have compact bodies, short ears, dense fur, and adaptations that help them endure long, bitterly cold winters.

Arctic lemmings feed mainly on grasses, sedges, mosses, roots, and other tundra vegetation. During winter, they remain active beneath the snow, where they create networks of tunnels that provide shelter from extreme temperatures and predators.

Despite their tiny size, lemmings are extremely important to the Arctic food web. They are a major source of food for snowy owls, Arctic foxes, weasels, and other predators. And contrary to a famous myth, lemmings do not deliberately jump off cliffs in mass suicides. Their resilience and importance to the ecosystem make them fascinating inhabitants of the Arctic wilderness. ❄️🌿✨
