Heidi Beirich, the former head of the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project, was arrested in California and charged in a superseding indictment. The charges include wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to submit false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to conceal money laundering. The Justice Department's criminal case against the SPLC has now expanded to include her.
Prosecutors allege that Beirich oversaw payments of donors' money to informants inside white supremacist groups, including an Imperial Wizard in the KKK, using shell companies. According to prosecutors, she shared a bank account with one informant, with whom she had a romantic relationship, and that informant received over $1 million from the SPLC since 2007. They say $140,000 of SPLC payments went into the shared account and was used for personal living expenses. Prosecutors also allege she paid a second informant $6,000 to take the fall for documents stolen by the first informant.
Breitbart reported that the informant was identified as F-9, and that $140,000 in SPLC donor money was deposited into joint accounts shared by Beirich and F-9 between 2015 and 2021, about 66 percent of all deposits into those accounts. The Blaze reported that Beirich served as director of the SPLC's Intelligence Project from 2012 until 2019 and oversaw a field agent who infiltrated a neo-Nazi group called the National Alliance. She appeared in court in Riverside, California.
Attorney General Todd Blanche said Beirich was part of an effort to open bank accounts under fictitious company names and make payments described inaccurately. Her attorney, Michael J. Proctor, called the charges politically motivated and said Beirich is innocent. The SPLC said the indictment has not changed its commitment to the cause.
