On August 9, the streets of Brussels come alive for the annual Meyboom celebration, a tradition dating back to 1308. The day includes a colourful procession with giant figures, musicians, dancers, traditional costumes and, of course, the famous Meyboom tree. 🎺🎭
The highlight is the planting of the tree, which must take place before 5 PM. According to tradition, if Brussels fails to plant it in time, Leuven wins! 🌳⏰😂
The Meyboom tradition is connected to the centuries-old rivalry between Brussels and Leuven and has become an important part of Brussels’ cultural identity. It is also recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. 🇧🇪
