In this video, I explain the difference between PTSD and Complex PTSD (CPTSD), and how repeated or prolonged trauma can affect emotional regulation, self-worth, relationships, and the nervous system.
I discuss the core symptoms of PTSD, including re-experiencing, avoidance, and a continuing sense of threat, and how Complex PTSD can also involve deep shame, difficulty regulating emotions, negative beliefs about oneself, and challenges in relationships.
I also explain how childhood experiences such as emotional neglect, abuse, humiliation, bullying, unpredictable anger, and exposure to domestic violence can shape long-term survival responses such as fight, flight, freeze, and fawn.
I look at how Complex PTSD is recognized in ICD-11, why it may sometimes be seen only as anxiety, depression, anger, insomnia, overthinking, or relationship difficulties, and why understanding where these patterns began can be important.
I explore these themes in greater detail in my upcoming book, What Happened to Me?: Indian Perspectives on Childhood Trauma and Recovery, which I have co-authored with Riri G. Trivedi and Hemalatha Ramani.
