The AI cybersecurity race just got a lot more competitive. Chinese AI startup Z.ai has announced that its upcoming open-source model, GLM-5.3, achieved an 84.5% score on the CyberGym vulnerability detection benchmark — slightly surpassing the 83.8% recorded by Anthropic's restricted cybersecurity model, Mythos 5. This is a significant milestone in the global competition to develop AI systems capable of identifying and defending against software vulnerabilities, and it raises important questions about the geopolitics of AI-powered cybersecurity.
But the picture is more nuanced than the headline suggests. While GLM-5.3 matched Mythos 5 in passive flaw detection, it trailed significantly in active exploit generation — scoring 54.4% compared to Mythos 5's 78% on ExploitBench. Z.ai plans to release GLM-5.3 publicly in two weeks following safety audits, though its most sensitive cybersecurity capabilities will remain restricted behind a trusted access vetting program. As open-weight AI models approach the capabilities of restricted government and enterprise systems, the debate over AI safety, access controls, and national security is intensifying.
