US President Donald Trump clashed with a CNN reporter during a tense Oval Office appearance on Monday, interrupting her as she questioned him about his recent communications with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The exchange began after Trump discussed his relationship with Kim and defended scaling back US military exercises with South Korea. When the CNN reporter asked whether Kim had requested the reduction, Trump interrupted and said, “Quiet. You’re very disrespectful in front of this young man, okay?”
The reporter identified her outlet, saying, “I’m with CNN.” Trump immediately responded, “Fake news.”
As she attempted to clarify her question about his conversations with Kim, Trump called her “a loud, boisterous person” and later told her, “Be quiet.”
The confrontation happened during an event honoring 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams, who rescued a 10-year-old boy from dangerous waves at a California beach.
Trump had earlier said, “Kim Jong-un has always treated me with great respect,” adding, “I understand him, he understands me.”
The heated exchange quickly drew attention online and renewed debate over Trump's tense relationship with the press.
