The Cauvery water dispute has once again become a source of tension between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. On August 17, 2026, the Supreme Court directed the Karnataka government to strictly comply with the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) orders and release Tamil Nadu’s allocated share of water. Tamil Nadu has alleged that despite sufficient water reserves in Karnataka’s reservoirs, it is not receiving its due share. Karnataka, on the other hand, maintains that it must also meet the irrigation needs of its farmers and the drinking water requirements of Bengaluru and other areas. The two states have also presented differing claims over water flow recorded at the Billigundlu gauging station.
