Spain expands migrant facilities in Ceuta as shelters exceed capacity
Spain began building a new temporary migrant camp in Ceuta on Tuesday (August 18), aimed at housing migrants unable to access shelters because of overcrowding. Authorities say four temporary sites will be built with capacity for up to 1,500 people. An estimated 5,000 to 8,000 migrants remain in the Spanish North African enclave following a mass border crossing two weeks ago, when more than 72,000 people entered the territory. Most later returned voluntarily. Existing reception centers are operating beyond capacity, leaving hundreds of migrants sheltering from intense summer heat under makeshift bamboo structures on Ceuta's El Trampoline beach.
