Lawrence Mayor Brian DePeña has been arrested in Massachusetts over allegations that he misused more than $1.5 million in COVID-19 relief loans, according to prosecutors.
The case drew widespread attention after reporters questioned DePeña about the fraud allegations. His lawyer responded, “He doesn’t speak English. No comment.”
During the exchange, DePeña repeatedly smiled and told reporters, “God bless you.”
The brief video quickly went viral online, triggering heated debate about the mayor’s ability to communicate with the public and questions surrounding his alleged conduct.
DePeña, 61, was elected mayor of Lawrence in 2021 and won re-election in 2025. He previously served on the city council and was born in the Dominican Republic.
Federal prosecutors allege that he improperly used Economic Injury Disaster Loans intended to support businesses during the pandemic. U.S. Attorney Leah Foley said the mayor had betrayed the trust of his constituents.
If convicted, DePeña could face up to 30 years in prison.
