Two workers were killed and several others injured after two powerful explosions ripped through a recycling facility in Toledo, Ohio, early Tuesday morning.
The blasts struck Brent Industries shortly before 5 a.m. during a shift change, triggering a large fire and sending thick black smoke across the surrounding area. Firefighters searching the heavily damaged building later discovered the bodies of a male and female employee.
Officials said two or three additional workers suffered minor injuries. The explosions caused severe structural damage, with much of the facility’s roof destroyed and several walls blown out.
Nearby resident Demetrius Langston described feeling the impact from roughly half a mile away, saying, “The shock waves came down the block.”
Authorities initially faced concerns over hazardous materials, chemical runoff and the possibility of further explosions. Air monitoring later found no dangerous threat.
The cause of the blasts remains unknown, while officials continue investigating. Residents near the area were advised to avoid the site and keep doors and windows closed because of the smoke.
