Graham made the remarks after being asked whether Taiwan and the South China Sea should be considered U.S. national security issues. She said she supports the military and highlighted her family’s military background, but acknowledged that national security is not her area of expertise.
The comments come just one week before the special election runoff to replace the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. Her opponent, Rep. Ralph Norman, immediately emphasized his experience in Congress and called Taiwan a definite U.S. ally while praising Donald Trump’s approach toward Taiwan and China.
The debate exchange has intensified scrutiny of the Republican race, particularly over foreign policy and national security experience.
