Eyewitness video shows severe flooding in northern Chile after heavy rains
Intense rainfall left streets flooded, damaged homes, and swept away vehicles in Tocopilla, one of the hardest-hit municipalities in Chile's Antofagasta region on Tuesday (August 18), prompting evacuations and a state of catastrophe declaration.
Reuters verified footage circulating on social media showed a flooded street in Tocopilla, with muddy floodwaters rushing through the roadway. Reuters verified the location from road layout, gas station and construction that matched archive and satellite imagery of the area. The date was verified from original file metadata and official reports of floodings in the area on August 18.
President José Antonio Kast has decreed a state of constitutional exception of catastrophe for the province of Tocopilla and that all human and material resources be made available to confront the emergency.
Meanwhile, Chile's disaster response agency SENAPRED has issued a red alert for Antofagasta, Taltal, Mejillones and Tocopilla due to the severe weather.
