Did Iran shoot down a U.S. aircraft over the Strait of Hormuz? An American E-3 Sentry reportedly transmitted the emergency 7700 squawk code before disappearing from publicly available flight-tracking data, triggering intense speculation online.
The E-3 Sentry is a critical U.S. airborne early-warning and surveillance aircraft used to monitor airspace and coordinate military operations. Reports say the aircraft changed altitude and turned away from the Hormuz region before its public tracking signal disappeared.
However, there is currently no confirmed evidence that Iran shot down the aircraft. A 7700 emergency signal can indicate many situations, including mechanical problems, fire, medical emergencies, fuel issues or other serious incidents. Military aircraft can also disappear from civilian tracking systems for operational-security reasons.
The incident is nevertheless drawing attention because the U.S. has already suffered a confirmed E-3 Sentry loss during the Iran conflict earlier in 2026.
