A prosecution psychiatrist has directly challenged Lindsay Clancy’s insanity defense, telling jurors that she was criminally responsible when her three children were killed.
Dr. Avram Mack testified that Clancy understood what she was doing and remained capable of controlling her actions. His assessment conflicts sharply with the defense’s claim that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time.
Mack said he found no evidence of psychosis or mania in the records he reviewed and instead believed Clancy was experiencing a major depressive episode. He also described her behavior around the killings as organized and deliberate.
“My opinion is that she retained the capacity required for having criminal responsibility for these actions,” Mack told the jury.
Clancy is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan. She acknowledges killing her children but argues that severe mental illness made her legally not responsible.
The contrasting psychiatric opinions could become crucial as the trial moves toward closing arguments.
