Ian Lee, Associate Professor at Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business in Ottawa, spoke to CGTN Europe about the breakdown in U.S.-Canada trade negotiations and Canada’s economic dependence on its southern neighbour. He said the two countries’ deep economic, cultural and geographic ties make any major decoupling unrealistic. Lee argued that the current tensions reflect both policy differences and President Trump’s political style, which has fuelled strong emotions in Canada and made compromise more difficult. While some Canadians hope relations could improve after Trump leaves office, he said negotiations are likely to remain challenging for now.
