After years of rumors, false starts, and endless questions from fans, National Treasure 3 is finally moving closer to reality. Director Jon Turteltaub has confirmed that the long-awaited third installment in the beloved adventure franchise is officially in development—and the biggest news is that Nicolas Cage is expected to return as Benjamin Franklin Gates.
Turteltaub, who directed both National Treasure and its sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets, made the exciting announcement during a live event in Philadelphia. He revealed that the project now has a script that both he and Disney support, marking a major step forward after nearly two decades of uncertainty.
The director described the project as “finally real,” although he humorously reminded fans that anything can still happen in Hollywood. Still, this is perhaps the strongest confirmation fans have received about a third movie in years.
Even more exciting, Turteltaub suggested that the filmmakers hope to bring back as much of the original cast as possible. That means audiences could potentially see familiar faces reunite with Cage for another mystery-packed adventure filled with hidden clues, historical secrets, and impossible treasure hunts.
The original National Treasure arrived in 2004 and turned Nicolas Cage's Benjamin Gates into one of cinema's most memorable treasure hunters. The 2007 sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, expanded the adventure and left fans with one massive unanswered question: What exactly was written on Page 47?
For years, a third film seemed unlikely. The franchise spent a long time in development limbo, and Cage himself had previously expressed doubts about whether another movie would happen. Disney later explored the universe through the National Treasure: Edge of History streaming series, but the show was canceled after one season.
Now, however, the situation appears to have changed dramatically. With a script in place, Turteltaub publicly confirming the project, and Cage expected to reprise his iconic role, the treasure hunt may finally be back on.
Fans will still have to wait for official details about production dates, additional casting, and the story. But after almost 20 years of waiting, Benjamin Gates appears ready to follow another clue—and this time, National Treasure 3 may actually lead audiences back to the big screen.
