By October 1942, four American carriers had been sunk in the Pacific. One was left. USS Enterprise. If she went down, Guadalcanal was finished. The supply lines to Australia — cut. The entire Allied offensive — dead.
On October 26, a wall of Japanese torpedo bombers came straight for her. One pilot with fifty seconds of ammunition was all that stood between Enterprise and the bottom of the ocean.
But the real story starts the day before. With an admiral's order that should never have been given. And ends two days later — with a pen stroke that erased what should have been the highest honor in the United States military.
