A powerful tornado swept through southwestern France on Monday, August 24, leaving a trail of destruction across the Aude region.
The village of Pomas was among the hardest-hit areas, with around 300 homes damaged as violent winds tore roofs from buildings, uprooted trees and scattered debris through residential streets. Authorities said 41 people were injured, while 15 were taken to hospital, including a pregnant woman hurt when her home collapsed.
Tornado footage was also captured near Verzeille, another village in Aude, where homes suffered damage and windows were shattered by the powerful winds.
More than 120 emergency workers were sent to the affected areas as authorities responded to the widespread destruction. The severe weather also left around 2,800 homes across 10 villages without electricity, while transport disruptions and flight delays were reported in several parts of France.
The storm came as a period of extreme summer heat gave way to intense thunderstorms across southern France, creating dangerous conditions in the region.
