Spanish town loads trucks with tomatoes in preparation for massive food fight
Seven trucks were filled with 150,000 kilograms of tomatoes (330,693 pounds) in the Spanish town of Buñol on Tuesday (August 25) in preparation for the traditional 'La Tomatina' food fight. During the yearly event, attendees throw tomatoes at each other for one hour. Organizers say they expect 22,000 visitors from all around the world. Tomatoes used are not for human consumption and are soft enough to avoid injuries when thrown, Buñol first deputy mayor Sergio Galarza said. The Tomatina fight originated from a spontaneous bust-up amongst villagers in 1945. The event, banned for a time during the 1950s at the height of General Francisco Franco's dictatorship, has drawn a huge international following in recent years.
