It was during the blessed month of Ramdhan that Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions (RA) fought in many historic battles to make Allah's (SWA) name the highest via establishing Islam. This epitomised 'living by Islam' by fasting and 'Living for Islam' by engaging in the struggle for this Deen. Should we not reflect on how secular materialistic attitudes have seeped ...into our spirit of Ramadhan? This concept of struggle is much needed today in a month where the look and feel of Ramadhan is increasingly hyped while the essence is ever-fading.
In this blessed month our fasting should be seen within the context of the struggle of our Ummah. This is not a month to 'retreat' from the struggle for this Deen but a month for us to realise why Ramadhan was a month of victory in our illustrious history. The Ibadah in Ramadhan also includes taking responsibility for our Ummah. So which is it? Do we live BY Islam or live FOR Islam?
