ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION
Pope Benedict donned a black and silver Mexican sombrero on Sunday (March 25) as his popemobile made its way through the streets of Guanajuato. The move elicited a roar from the crowd.
The Pope also took a helicopter tour around Guanajuato before delivering an historic open-air mass. The pontiff was in the air for about 20 minutes viewing the Cristo Rey (Christ the King) statue as crowds gathered below for the main event. An estimated crowd of some 300,000 people are expected to attend the mass.
Taking place just before Easter, the visit was the first for Pope Benedict in the largely conservative Catholic country. The previous Pope, John Paul II, visited Mexico five times during his 27-years as leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
