They've had their own branding on devices ranging from game consoles to portable media players. The one area where Microsoft has yet to make a presence is in PC manufacturing.
One reason for this is their relationship with OEMs such as Dell and HP which would be placed at risk by essentially becoming their own customer's competition.
One advantage to taking control of the customer experience from stem to stern would be through having the ability to slim and streamline their OS to work well with a predictable set of hardware. In much the same way Apple is able to optimize their OS, Microsoft would gain the ability to reduce the size and sluggishness of their software through control of the hardware.
