The mother of a Colorado shooting victim attends her son's funeral.

The 18-year-old was one of 12 people gunned down at a movie theatre in July.

Now suspected shooter James Holmes faces two murder counts for each victim in addition to 116 attempted murder charges for the 58 injured in the rampage.

On Thursday, his lawyer said Holmes has a mental illness and tried to get help before the shooting, although he did not specify the nature of the illness.

A former neuroscience graduate student at the University of Colorado, 24-year-old Holmes appeared alert but disinterested during his pre-trial hearing.

He is accused of opening fire at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" at a suburban Colorado theatre.

Multiple news organizations were also in court to ask that case documents be unsealed - a request the judge said he would rule on later.
