The maritime troubles of Glenn Ey are over, as he is rescued after going missing off the coast of Australia when his yacht ran into trouble.

The 44-year-old activated an emergency beacon on Tuesday (October 16), triggering a search which involved two international passenger flights.

An Air Canada plane swooped down, and armed with binoculars, the crew and passengers managed to spot the yacht and raise the alarm.

Back on dry land in Sydney, Ey thanked his rescuers and said it was a scary moment when his boat was damaged.

SOUNDBITE: (English) RESCUED YACHTSMAN GLENN EY SAYING:

"It's extraordinary, the noise is like an explosion, you upside down, smashing around inside the boat filling up with water. I don't think there is anyone who would deny being concerned and you do think your number's up."

Maritime teams were unable to retrieve Ey's yacht, which has been left drifting at sea.
