The U.S army demonstrates chemical decontamination equipment during an exercise in South Korea.

The U.S. 23rd Chemical Battalion's commander says the event, with South Korean forces, underscored American commitment to its ally.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. 23RD BATTALION COMMANDER COLONEL DALE S. CROCKETT SAYING:

"We do that primarily by chemical detection, hazard detection, decontamination, what you all, I believe, saw today, the demonstration we did, as well as support consequence management operations in the Republic of Korea. That is our focus."

The demonstration took place amid escalating tension on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea has threatened nuclear attacks on the U.S. and its bases in South Korea.

The threats were its response to new UN sanctions over a recent nuclear test and rocket launch and to joint U.S. drills with the South that Pyongyang said were hostile.
