STORY: Oscar-winning director Ang Lee came back to Taiwan and attended a news conference on Thursday (May 9) to talk about his work and giving a boost to Taiwan's film industry.

This is Lee's first public appearance in Taiwan after his film "Life of Pi" won four Academy Awards, including Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score.

At the news conference, Culture Minister Lung Ying-tai launched a 500 million Taiwan dollars (17 million USD) project to fund local documentaries for five years.

When asked about his next project, Lee said he is excited about his new TV drama "Tyrant", a story about an unassuming American family drawn into the affairs of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation.

"Tyrant is a Middle East palace intrigue, the subject matter is touchy and pretty scary, I like to scare myself, that force me to do my best. I'm very excited about this new project," he said.
