Flipped car, uprooted trees after Super Typhoon Bavi lashes Guam

The streets of Guam are littered with fallen debris, uprooted trees and a flipped car after Super Typhoon Bavi tore through the US Pacific territories, bringing heavy rain and winds of up to 180 miles (290 kilometers) per hour. Authorities say they have received reports of "major" damage on the neighboring island of Rota where the hurricane made landfall. Super Typhoon Bavi crossed the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean on Monday (July 6), lashing Guam, Tinian and Saipan and blasting Rota with catastrophic winds, the US National Weather Service (NWS) said. The service warned residents to take cover as the Category 5 storm moved through the island chain, parts of which are the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the US territory of Guam, about 3,800 miles (6,116 km) west of Hawaii and 1,550 miles (2,494 km) east of the Philippines. Eyewitness footage shot from Guam's beachside neighborhood Apotgan showed heavy winds and rains lashing trees, tennis courts and buildings on Monday.
