The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently addressing a widespread outbreak of Cyclosporiasis across seventeen states in the United States. As of early July 2026, there have been 145 confirmed cases domestically, with twenty individuals hospitalized. This parasitic intestinal infection, attributed to the microscopic organism Cyclospora cayetanensis, is believed to be transmitted through a yet-to-be-identified contaminated food or water source. Health officials are urgently working to trace this source before the peak of the summer outbreak period. Notably, all reported cases occurred between May 1 and June 6, and none of the affected individuals had traveled internationally in the two weeks prior, indicating that the source of contamination is domestic. States impacted include Florida, Georgia, Ohio, among others. The CDC is advising anyone experiencing significant diarrhea, cramping, and fatigue to seek medical attention without delay, as symptoms may develop seven to ten days after exposure.
