Tourists battle sweltering temperatures in Kyoto as heatwave grips west Japan

Tourists battled sweltering temperatures in Japan’s western cultural hub of Kyoto on Thursday (July 23), as the government issued further warnings for extreme heat. According to Japan’s weather agency, temperatures reached up to 39.7 degrees Celsius (103.46 degrees Fahrenheit) on Thursday afternoon. Thursday also marked another officially-designated “brutally hot day”, or “kokushobi” in Japanese, for parts of central Japan, such as Shizuoka prefecture. The term was officially introduced for the first time on Wednesday (July 22).

Even before this week's extreme heat, 4,580 people were taken to hospital between July 6 and 12, including seven who later died, according to the latest data available from the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. Japan has experienced increasingly severe summers in recent years, with the country recording its all-time high temperature of 41.8 C (107.24 F) last year. The weather agency this year introduced the "kokushobi" category for days when temperatures reach 40 C (104 F) or higher, reflecting the growing frequency of extreme heat.
