There were significant developments this week on the bird flu outbreak in Australia. On the same day that South Australian authorities revealed the death of more than 1000 birds, Tasmania also confirmed the loss of over two dozen penguins and three crested terns. Ecologists say the deadly H5 bird flu is now established in Australia and there are fears the outbreak will worsen further as bird species move into mating season. Professor Michael Ward, Chair of Veterinary Public Health at the University of Sydney says the outbreak is concerning, but not surprising.
