Hot air balloon makes watery landing

A hot air balloon that was blown out to sea by unexpected weather conditions has made a successful landing in water, in Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay.

Hot air balloon pilot John Davidson was steering the craft and was preparing to touch down on a beach in South Melbourne, when a huge gust of wind blew the craft with ten passengers on board out to sea.

Davidson kept control of the balloon and managed to keep the craft afloat while waiting for emergency rescue crews to reach them.

"You know, this is not something that we want to do. We would rather just put it down in a nice park or oval before we get to the water so it's not an everyday occurrence, that's for sure," he said after getting back on land.

The flight had taken off from Burnley and was supposed to land in Albert Park, before windy conditions forced the craft to attempt a landing at St Kilda's beach.

All the passengers were transferred into police boats and taken to land before the hot air balloon was towed ashore.
