These boxes over the door of this church in Brittany, France contain skulls. "Boîtes à chefs" (also called "boîtes à crânes") are extremely rare. During the first French revolution in the 18th c., during The Terror, religion was banned and many things were desecrated or destroyed, and clergy killed, but Bretons tended to resist this, and also, it was often too remote for central authorities to bother with.

Breton is a Celtic language, and it was not required that French be used in public schools in Brittany ("Bretagne" in French) until 1936.

I am available as a private guide in France, and can also help you relocate, expatriate, expand your business, learn practical French, and more. My website provides a contact feature.
