凶悪犯・デンデン虫の奸計にはまって射殺された（アニメ版では車で轢き殺された）刑事・東八郎（あずま はちろう）。東は、その人格と記憶が科学者・谷方位（たに ほうい）博士によってスーパーロボットの電子頭脳に移植され、警視庁捜査一課にある7個捜査班のいずれにも属しない八番目の男「8マン」として甦った。平時は粋なダブルの背広姿の私立探偵・東八郎だが、ひとたび事件が起き、田中課長から要請を受けると8マンに変身し、数々の難事件・怪事件に立ち向かう。

Detective Azuma Hachiro was shot dead after falling victim to the vicious criminal Denden Mushi's treacherous scheme (in the anime version, he was run over by a car). Azuma's personality and memories were transplanted into the electronic brain of a super robot by scientist Dr. Tanihōi, resurrecting him as the eighth man, “8-Man,” belonging to none of the seven investigation teams within the Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigative Division. In peacetime, Azuma Hachiro is a stylish private detective in a double-breasted suit. But once a case arises and he receives a request from Chief Tanaka, he transforms into 8-Man and confronts numerous difficult and bizarre cases.
